Data-driven resource planning

We need

  • Systematic collection of reliable epidemiological, economic and service use data on heart failure – through dedicated heart failure registries and observational studies
  • Regular evaluations of the quality of heart failure care in hospital and community settings – to identify priority areas for improvement1 and the most efficient ways of delivering appropriate care
  • Research into the most relevant patient-reported outcomes in heart failure, e.g. quality of life – to ensure that ‘success’ is as much about improving people’s lives as achieving measurable clinical outcomes.

Why

  • The quality and availability of reliable data on the epidemiology of heart failure are variable across countries – with different definitions and data gaps making interpretation difficult (see table below).
  • National-level data on the quality of care are also lacking in many countries – only the UK (England and Wales) has an annual audit of heart failure care, however it is limited to hospital care.
